Police: Man arrested after shooting through door at officers

A Cape Coral man remained in jail Thursday after police say he fired through an apartment door at officers answering a disturbance call Monday.

Frank Affronti Sr., 52, of 1152 Hancock Creek Boulevard S. #303, remained in the Lee County Jail at press time on two counts of assault on a law enforcement officer and one count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon without intent to kill, according to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office web site.

Bond has been set at $50,000 for each charge.

According to the Cape Coral Police Department, officers were handling a disturbance at the Crossings Apartments on Hancock Creek Boulevard early Monday morning.

While speaking to one of the parties in the parking lot, officers were advised that subjects in the apartment had weapons.

Officers approached the apartment and made contact with two men, Frank Affronti Sr. and his adult son, Frank Affronti Jr., according to a release issued by the department Thursday.

While officers spoke with the son regarding the disturbance, Affronti Sr., who police described as “intoxicated,” went inside his apartment and began yelling obscenities through the apartment door at officers.

He then yelled to his son, “If they do what they came here to do, I’ll get them.” The son attempted to calm his father through the door, but Affronti reportedly yelled, “Why are you protecting them?”

Seconds later, three gunshots rang out as bullets penetrated the apartment door, officials said.

Officers got the son to safety, and took up positions of cover outside of the apartment.

“A brief verbal exchange then began between officers and Affronti. Affronti was ordered to come out of the apartment. He complied, crawling out of the apartment on his hands and knees,” the release states.

Affronti Sr. was taken to the Cape Coral Police Department for processing then later to the Lee County Jail.

Cape Coral Police Department detectives and Forensics personnel responded to the scene to process it for evidence.

“We were very fortunate that no one was injured in what could have easily turned into a lethal encounter,” said Det. Sgt. Dana Coston, Cape Coral Police Department Public Affairs officer in the statement. “Cool heads and quick thinking on the part of our Patrol Officers resulted in a fast and safe resolution to this unnecessary situation…”
