Celebrate your mom: Many choices in Cape Coral to treat, honor your mother
As Mother’s Day quickly approaches, business owners are seeing a trend toward custom gifts as the top sellers this year for celebrating mom.
When people used to buy flowers, the only question to follow was if they wanted a vase or basket with the bouquet, Tracey Jermy, the owner of Cape Coral Floral Designs, explained. Today, customers have so many choices.
“They order specific things from the pictures (featured on Web sites) – have keepsake containers,” she said. “Everything is specific now.”
“We can make sure they get exactly what they want,” Jermy added.
Open for business for nearly a decade, Cape Coral Floral Designs keeps a list online of preferred selections for people who do not have a special order.
“With Mother’s Day, you’re talking pinks, pastels, lavenders,” she said.
In-store coolers offer another option by featuring mixed bouquets with different flowers, which can also last longer because of the variety.
“Mixed arrangements is probably the way to go because if you mix the arrangements, you can have lots of different textures,” Jermy said.
Staff is always available to offer assistance and direction.
“They can find out their price point and help maximize their bang for their buck,” she said.
The Celebrate Mom bouquet appears to be a crowd favorite this year. It consists of an opaque vase with lilies, miniature roses and carnations.
“You don’t need to spend a fortune,” Jermy said.
Cape Coral Floral Designs also sells live plants for gifts, such as orchids, hydrangeas and miniature roses, as well as those special extras.
“We have European gourmet truffles, balloons and bears,” she said. “All those things that make the gifts more personalized.”
For a shinier gift for mom, Travis Jewelers is offering a new line.
“We custom-made a sea line for Mother’s Day,” Roberto Pinto, one of the owners, said. “It’s in sterling silver with 22-karat vermeil. It’s produced with semi-precious stones.”
The line includes pendants, bracelets, earrings and more, with pieces ranging in cost from $99 to $750, ensuring there is something for every budget.
“We have a lot of visitors down here, so a lot are buying that,” he said.
Travis Jewelers is also seeing clients shy away from cookie cutter styles.
“We’re custom-making a lot more pieces for Mother’s Day,” Pinto said. “Children want to make something more unique (for their mothers).
Another choice for saying thank you to mom this year is a mother’s ring.
“That’s the old-fashioned gift that was given to mom,” he said.
The child’s birthstone is put into a ring for the recipient.
“We are able to engrave on the surface of the ring the child’s name and the father’s name, so it makes it kind of unique,” Pinto said.
“We inlay that with black German enamel so it stands out,” he added.
A single color stone on a pendant is a guaranteed hit for buyers.
“That is the most simple thing they can acquire,” Pinto said. “And it’s the least expensive thing.”
For Mother’s Day, Travis Jewelers is offering 30 percent and 40 percent discounts on selected pieces, along with 30 percent off on watches.
“Watches are something the moms always get for Mother’s Day, too,” he said, adding that they make for a practical “very effective” present.
Estrerra Spa & Salon owner Krissy Simone reported that combining a la carte services for a customized package is a popular go-to gift idea for mothers.
“They want to give their mom or wife the gift of a pampering day, instead of just one service,” she said.
The most common combination – a 50-minute Swedish massage for $55, relaxation Swedish facial for $65, and rest and relaxation pedicure for $47.
“Our best package that we seem to be selling,” Simone said.
A gift card with a dollar amount is another option.
“We always recommend it for people who come and don’t know specifically what their loved one would want,” she said. “That way the person can choose exactly what they want for themselves.”
If the recipient receives a gift card for a pedicure, Estrerra Spa & Salon allows the person to upgrade to a higher level of pedicure. If they do not like their feet touched, for example, they can use it for a different service.
“They can always use that dollar amount toward a manicure,” Simone said for one solution to the situation. “We don’t lock them into anything.”
“The individual can still customize it to what suits them,” she added.
A less common spa service can be a refreshing gift pick.
“A lot of times, if a mom is just coming in to treat herself, they like to choose one of the more indulgent services,” Simone said, citing the paradise pedicure and the hot stone or hot bamboo massages as some examples.
“Because it’s something they just wouldn’t normally get,” she said.
Operating in the Cape for 15 years, Simone owned the Southwest Massage Shop before she relocated to The Westin-Cape Coral Resort at Marina Village. The new site offers waterfront views, locker and steam rooms, and more.
“It’s really like being on a mini vacation. You just feel like you’re at a retreat,” she said.
Customers also can access the marina’s restaurants and shops.
