Woman charged in death of daughter sentenced
A Cape Coral woman accused in the traffic-related death of her toddler earlier this year pleaded guilty to a lesser charge and was sentenced to probation.
Monique Trinity Oneill-Daghra, 31, of 538 S.E. Sixth Place, accepted a plea Thursday to one count of aggravated child neglect in the February death of Eva Daghra, 2. Oneill-Daghra received a sentence of 10 years of probation.
She was also ordered to undergo drug and mental health screenings.
Assistant state attorney Francine Donnorummo prosecuted the case.
It was unknown Monday if Oneill-Daghra had an attorney.
She did not return a message seeking comment on her case.
At 7:49 a.m., Feb. 22, the Fort Myers Police Department responded to a crash near the intersection of Fowler Street and Market Street in Fort Myers. According to police, the driver of a Cadillac – Oneill-Daghra – rear-ended a Lincoln.
Eva Daghra was reportedly sitting in the Cadillac in a car seat in the front passenger seat, but was not harnessed into the car seat. The car seat was not anchored down. During the crash, the air bag deployed and struck her.
Eva Daghra was trauma alerted to Lee Memorial Hospital, where she later died from internal injuries that she sustained in the accident.
No one else was injured in the crash, police reported.
In April, a judge signed a felony warrant for Oneill-Daghra’s arrest. She was charged with aggravated manslaughter of a child and booked at the jail.
According to officials, the original charge of aggravated manslaughter of a child is a first-degree felony that is punishable by up to 30 years in prison.
On Monday, the Fort Myers Police Department reminded parents of the importance of properly using child safety seats.
