Cape man injured in accident released from hospital
A Cape Coral driver hospitalized nearly two months ago after a semitrailer jumped a median and collided into oncoming traffic has been discharged.
Edel Dumenigo, 45, had been released from Lee Memorial Hospital as of Wednesday, officials reported. Dumenigo was transported to the facility in critical condition on Sept. 18, following the crash on County Road 951.
At about 5:45 p.m., Warren Gordon, 36, of Lehigh Acres, was traveling south on CR 951 in a semitrailer when he failed to maintain control of the trailer due to slow traffic, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
Gordon reportedly braked to avoid a collision, and the trailer crossed the median. Three vehicles headed northbound crashed into the semitrailer.
A 2002 Chevy F350 traveling in the inside lane, driven by Dumenigo, and a 2011 Ford F350 traveling in the center lane, driven by Floyd Early Lilly, 48, of Naples, were unable to stop and collided headfirst into the trailer’s side.
A 1995 Lexus traveling in the outside lane, driven by John Michael Ranieri, 82, of Marco Island, also could not stop and hit the semitrailer’s cab.
Dumenigo was taken to the hospital, along with one passenger. Joaquin Dumenigo, 68, of Fort Lauderdale, sustained serious injuries in the crash, according to officials. Joaquin Dumenigo was treated and later released.
Lilly and Ranieri reportedly sustained minor injuries, but they were not transported to a hospital. Ranieri’s passenger, John D. Ranieri, 52, of Marco Island, also reported sustaining minor injuries but was not transported.
Neither Gordon nor his passenger, Steve Walker, 31, of Fort Myers, were injured.
The FHP cited Gordon for careless driving, according to the report.
The accident was reportedly not alcohol related.
