Officials working to retrieve body from water off Midpoint Bridge
A body has been located in the water off of the Midpoint Bridge.
At 10:39 a.m., the Lee County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a body in the water. A man was bicycling across the bridge when he stopped at the top of the Midpoint and “happened to look down,” according to officials.
“He spotted a body floating near the canal dividers,” Lt. Larry King, a spokesperson for the LCSO, said.
The bicyclist called 911, and the LCSO Marine Unit and Major Crimes Unit responded. The Marine Unit is working to retrieve the body from the Caloosahatchee River.
“We’re still there,” he said.
No information is available yet on the deceased, including sex.
“We’re just doing a death investigation,” King said. “Nothing suspicious at this point, until we can get the body further examined.”
The Medical Examiner will examine the body for positive identification.
“Then we’ll start checking missing persons reports,” he said.
The Fort Myers Police Department and Cape Coral Police Department have been assisting with the operation, according to officials.
