Fund-raiser set for 2-year-old who had stroke
A Cape Coral family is seeking donations to help offset costs that have accumulated from their 2-year-old son’s medical condition.
Logan Gibbs just turned 2 in August. Lindsey, his mother, said he is 36 inches tall with curly brown hair and bright blue eyes.
Right after Logan was born the family’s primary care physician checked him out and heard a murmur, so they set up an appointment when he was 1 month old. She said the doctors told her that it is common for a baby to have a murmur after they are born.
Once the results from an X-ray, EKG and ECO cardiogram came back, Logan was diagnosed with Tetralogy of Fallot, otherwise known as a hole in his heart.
At 6 months old he had open heart surgery, which was done in March of 2010.
“The surgery went very well,” Lindsey said.
Everything was fine until a few months back when he had a bilateral thalamic infarction, a stroke, on Oct. 6.
That morning, Lindsey said she tried to wake him up, but he did not want to get up. She got him ready for day care and he fell asleep in the car on the way.
“I set him down to go play and he kind of stumbled a little bit,” Lindsey said, once they arrived at day care. She thought it had to do with him being tired.
Two hours after she dropped him off she received a phone call telling her she should pick Logan up. They told her that Logan had been asleep for two hours and was unstable on his feet.
Logan had severe diarrhea four or five days before the stroke occurred. Once they left the day care, he was taken to the emergency room because he was severely dehydrated.
Lindsey said they gave him fluids and he still was not getting any better.
“That is when they started performing other tests,” she said.
Three days later the doctor gave the prognosis that he had had a stroke.
“He has not had another one,” Lindsey said about the stroke. She said since they do not know what caused it he is at high risk for it occurring, or not occurring, again.
The stroke left damage to his brain, which has affected both his motor and verbal skills.
Logan now goes to physical and speech therapy twice a week. He also sees a neurologist and cardiologist at least once a month to make sure everything is OK.
“We are expecting for him to make an excellent recovery,” she said. “He is a strong-willed child, and he will not give up and we will not give up on him.”
Lindsey said Logan is your average caring, fun, smart, talkative and energetic 2-year-old.
“He is still as lively as ever,” his mother said. “He has the biggest personality.”
She said Logan does not qualify for Medicaid because her income is too high as a server, but he qualifies for Medikids.
A golf tournament will be held to raise funds for the family on Dec. 3 at Coral Oaks Golf Course. There is a registration fee of $75. For information and to register call Amanda at 239-229-1493 or Janet at 239-633-7623.
Donations can also be made to the Logey Bear Fund at any Fifth Third Bank or on their website at www.logeybearfund.com.
“We have had a lot of help from friends and family and people that we don’t know,” Lindsey said.
She said they are very thankful for all the support they have received. Lindsey said people are so giving and they are very thankful for that.
