2 min read

The regular monthly meeting for the Cape Coral Historical Society will be held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday Nov. 8, at Cultural Park Theatre, 528 cultural Park Boulevard.

The featured speaker will be Dr. Stephen D. Engle, Ph.D., from Florida State University. He is currently professor of history at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton. His topic will be “Lincoln’s Crisis of Federalism.” It deals with the negotiation of power between Lincoln and his loyal governors.

A native of the Lower Shenandoah Valley, Engle grew up near Harpers Ferry, W.Va. In his time at FAU, he has served as the director of graduate programs (1997-2002) and as chair of the department (2002-2007). His current projects include a history of northern federalism during the Civil War, as well as a project that focuses on the role of northern governors in shaping political and military policy during the war.

His most recent work examines federalism and states rights in the North during the Civil War and is entitled “All the President’s Statesmen,” currently under consideration with Johns Hopkins University Press.

This is a rare opportunity to meet an accomplished and gifted lecturer and author on the Civil War. No reservations are required, and there is no admission fee.
