Cape High plans open houses for IB program
Cape Coral High School will hold a few open houses next month and in January for those interested in the International Baccalaureate program.
“The IB program is the most challenging college prep curriculum available to students in our district and we want to offer as many opportunities as we can to parents of academically motivated students to learn about the program, as well as ask questions to ensure they make an informed decision regarding their school choice,” IB Coordinator Savanna Pavkov said this week.
She said there are 274 students enrolled in the IB program at Cape Coral High School, which includes 160 students in the 9th and 10th grade pre-diploma program and 114 in the junior and senior IB diploma program.
The students who are in the program take six course, including English, Spanish or French; history; biology or environmental studies; mathematics; and an elective in art, business or information technology. In addition, the students must complete an extended essay, a course in theory of knowledge and creativity, action and service projects.
Those entering their freshman year of high school and want to be a part of the IB program must have a 7th grade minimum unweighted GPA of 3.0 and a minimum FCAT reading score of 1876 and a FCAT math score of 1857.
“Also, students may apply even if their 7th grade scores do not meet. We will review 8th grade scores when released and they may also apply as sophomores,” Pavkov said.
The school will hold three open houses on campus, which will all begin at 6 p.m.
The first open house, pre-IB invitational meeting, will be held Dec. 5 for incoming 9th grade students who qualify for the program.
Pavkov said the open house will be held for students in the West Zone who meet the requirements for entry into the 9th grade pre-diploma program. Those who attend will receive an overview of the pre-diploma program, as well as the IB program, along with highlights of what opportunities the program has to offer to the students.
“We sent letters to students whose grades and FCAT scores for 7th grade qualified them,” she said about the first open house.
The next one, the Choice Open House, will be held Jan. 11.
“This evening is our chance to show off everything we have to offer at Cape High to all West Zone 8th graders and their parents who are looking for the best in the west,” she said.
The final open house will be held Jan. 17 for any interested parents and students for the pre-IB and IB program. Pavkov said this is a follow-up for any parents and students who were unable to attend the Dec. 5 open house, or are interested in learning more about the program opportunities.
Pavkov said the school is accepting pre-diploma applications from Jan. 17 through March 2. Applications will be available at each one of the open houses.
