Firefighters rescue dog from canal

2 min read

Kurt and Sally Earlywine were searching frantically for their beloved border collie, Indy, when they got a call that he had been found stuck in a Cape Canal.
Missing since 5 a.m. Thursday, the Earlywines’ feared the worst.
Kurt was in the car, Sally on her feet, when they heard sirens and hoped it meant Indy had been found.
“We both feared he may have been in a canal somewhere,” Kurt said. “Our dogs have been in and out of pools, but I had a premonition, or whatever you want to call it, that he was in a canal.”
Cape Coral firefighters responded to a call in the 400 block of Coral Drive, after an alert neighbor on Cobal Court spotted the dog in the water.
Indy, 17, was unable to get out of the canal, but was found in good health after firefighters extracted him around 8 am.
Indy suffered cuts and bruises, but not much else.
“We’re ecstatic and the fire department are wonderful people,” Kurt Earlywine said.
Indy suffers from cataracts and is also deaf.
Found nearly a mile from the Earlywines’ home, Kurt said he couldn’t figure out how he landed in the water.
He figured Indy had wandered away but didn’t know how he ended up in the water.
“He’s never been this far away before … we don’t know if he went into the river and swam into the canal or just fell in the canal,” he added.
Cape firefighters called the number on Indy’s collar and he was reunited with his family.
Kurt said Indy was “a little sore” but resting and recovering well, “laying around” and taking some pain medication.
