A Cape Coral man received an 11-year prison sentence Thursday after pleading guilty to attempted murder in a 2007 incident.
Javario Anton Barron, 24, of 2206 N.E. 15th Terrace, was sentenced to prison followed by four years of probation. Barron pled to second-degree attempted murder, aggravated assault on an officer, resisting an officer with violence and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
According to police officials, the Narcotics Unit of the Cape Coral Police Department, along with the SWAT team, served a search warrant at 2206 N.E. 15th Terrace on Dec. 14, 2007. As officers entered the residence and identified themselves as police, a man ran into a dark bedroom.
The man then “began shooting at officers from inside of the bedroom,” Lt. Anthony Sizemore, spokesman for the police, wrote in a prepared statement. “Three SWAT team members returned fire into the bedroom.”
A flash-bang grenade was thrown into the room occupied by the man, later identified as Barron. Barron surrendered and was taken into custody without incident, according to officials. Nobody was injured during the shootout.
At the time, Barron was charged with three counts of attempted murder of a police officer, as well as possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and trafficking in cocaine. More than 28 grams of crack cocaine was reportedly discovered in the home as a result of the search warrant.
Officers also recovered a .40 caliber Taurus handgun from the residence.
