Miniature golf tournament to benefit United Way
The first Cape Coral Cup Miniature Golf Tournament, sponsored by the United States Postal Service, will be held on Jan. 9 at Mike Greenwell’s Bat-A-Ball Family Fun Park to benefit United Way of Lee County.
Debra Mitchell, customer relations for the United States Postal Service, said they are hosting the event through the Combined Federal Campaign, which is a campaign done for all federal agencies to canvas their employees to donate to a specific agency.
“The money raised stays here locally,” Mitchell said, adding that they will designate all of the funds to the United Way of Lee County.
United Way of Lee County President Cliff Smith said the post office has a long history of being very committed to the community and giving back.
“They have a long history of supporting the United Way,” he said, dating well before his time with the organization. “We are thankful that they are doing this.”
The miniature golf tournament is being held because organizers wanted to host an event that would involve the whole family, Mitchell said. She explained that she has held pool and bowling tournaments in the past that only attracted adults.
“Even I can play miniature golf,” Smith said. “We are looking forward to doing it.”
The tournament includes a family and an adult team category. A green jacket will be given to the top adult golfer and a jazzy green putter will be given to the top child golfer.
“My thought process is next year they will come back and present the next year’s winners with the jacket and putter,” she said.
The $10 registration fee, which will be collected the day of the event, includes a round of golf, hot dog, chips and drink. The first 100 registrants will receive a free T-shirt.
A maximum of five golfers can sign up for a team, with families having up to six members. The tournament will be held from 10 a.m. until noon, noon until 2 p.m. or 2 p.m. until 4 p.m.
Mitchell said if she gets enough people who are interested in the event she will open up another time slot from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m.
Those who are interested in registering are can send Mitchell an email or letter through the regular mail that includes the name of the golfers, contact information, either an email address or phone number, along with a time preference.
She can be reached by email at debra.j.mitchell@usps.com or by mail at Debra Mitchell, 79 Mid Cape Terrace, Cape Coral, Fl 33991.
Door prizes also will be available the day of the event, which includes a trip for two on the Key West Express and a free round of golf at a local golf course.
“I am really hoping the community comes out and supports it,” Mitchell said, adding she wants to keep the event in Cape Coral instead of bringing it into Fort Myers next year.
The money raised during the golf tournament will benefit the network of 72 local agencies in the community through the United Way.
Smith explained that the many agencies help children reach their potential, people in crisis and the elderly who are struggling.
The money is “supporting the entire network of local agencies in the community,” he said.
“We are really appreciative of those at that post office,” Smith said. “They are wonderful people that really do care about our community.”
The Cape Coral Cup Miniature Golf Tournament will be held at Mike Greenwell’s Bat-A-Ball Family Fun Park at 35 N.E. Pine Island Road.
