Fire that damaged Cape home called accidental
A residential fire Wednesday has been ruled accidental in nature.
At about 3:15 p.m., Cape Coral police and fire units responded to a home at 2802 S.W. 36th Terrace. The home had a “very light amount of smoke emanating from the top of the roof” when the units arrived, a report states.
The homeowner told police that he was doing yard work in the front when he glanced inside his open garage. He noticed smoke was coming from the ceiling by his attic door and he watched as several pieces of drywall fell to the floor.
Realizing something had burning inside of the attic, the man called 911.
The homeowner was the only one home at the time.
The fire department and State Fire Marshal’s Office investigated.
According to Battalion Chief Alan Carter of the Cape fire department, the heat source was found to be electrical and the area of origin was around the air-conditioning unit in the garage. The point of origin was undetermined, but electrical in nature.
The fire caused an estimated $30,000 in damage to the home, he reported.
