Cape Harbour hosting annual New Year’s Eve party
Cape Harbour is hosting its 5th annual New Year’s Eve party Friday, Dec. 31, which will feature a ball drop, fireworks and live music.
George Pisello, who was the superintendent that built the two high rise buildings at Cape Harbour, has been designing the ball drop for the New Year’s Eve party since the event started. He explained that when the second high rise was in the final stages of being completed, staff from Cape Harbour asked if they could use the tower crane for the ball drop, which everyone agreed to.
The week after New Year’s, they asked Pisello how they were going to have the ball drop again the following year without the crane. He explained that the ideas of how to have another ball drop were already in motion before they asked.
“I designed something that could do it,” he said, which included two steel cables hung between the two buildings that were controlled by an electric winch. “With trial and error for about a week, the ball drop went off without a hitch.”
The ball, Pisello said, which begins at 85 feet, drops with 10,000 white lights flashing the entire time before it hits its 35-foot mark at midnight. Fireworks will accompany the ball drop as it makes its way down with the countdown.
“Usually I find someone in the crowd and hand them the remote and tell them to push the red button,” Pisello said. Once midnight strikes, 2011 will light up in red to bring in the new year.
Event Coordinator Glenda Swager said Soapy Tuna will perform from 8 p.m. until 1 a.m. at The Joint on New Year’s Eve.
Runrummers will have open dinner seating from 5-10 p.m. Cafe Pignoli will also feature food specialties and live music by Vinny Sax with Soul.
The Banana Bay Tour Company will make its final sunset voyage of the year as it heads out for a two-hour cruise beginning an hour before sunset. For more information,call (239) 728-8687.
Swager invites everyone to join the party at Cape Harbour to “say farewell to 2010 and welcome to 2011.”
“It’s absolutely fabulous,” she said about the event. “It grows every year.”
Those who attend the event are asked to bring a non-perishable food item to help support those in need.
“We are collecting it for the needy of the community,” Swager said.
