Goodwill, Community Bank to host ‘Shred Day’
“Shred Day” is returning to Cape Coral next week.
Goodwill Industries of Southwest Florida and Florida Community Bank are partnering the event, offering shredding service for anyone in the community.
The “Shred Day” event is Wednesday, Nov 17, from 1-3 p.m., at the Florida Community Bank, 205 N. Del Prado Blvd. You do not have to be a customer of the bank to utilize the service.
Goodwill’s Kirsten O’Donnell said one bag or box of sensitive papers will be shredded for free, and any additional bag or box will cost $5.
As for the size of the bag or box O’Donnell said, “We’re not trying to put restrictions on the size but if you can’t carry it, it might be too big. If you can carry it, we’ll shred it.”
Documents are not shredded on site, O’Donnell said.
Instead, all sensitive documents will be collected in locked bins and transported back to Goodwill’s secure shredding facility in North Fort Myers. Certificates of destruction will be made available once the materials are shredded at the facility.
“We’ll take someone’s name and address and once the documents are shredded, we’ll mail the certificate,” O’Donnell said, adding, “It helps people feel confident their materials were destroyed.”
Goodwill has been operating its document destruction service, Secure Shred, since 2007.
Secure Shred provides jobs for local people with severe disabilities, and provides service to a host of agencies around Southwest Florida, including the city of Cape Coral, the United Way and the City of Fort Myers, among others.
Next week’s “Shred Day” will mark the 13th time Goodwill has hosted the event in Lee County, and the sixth time in Cape Coral.
