The Lee County Shuffleboard Club is again this year offering free shuffleboard lessons, every Saturday now through the end of December.
You don’t need equipment or reservations to learn, just show up at 9 a.m. any given Saturday, officials said.
“The lessons are for beginners but we also see more experienced players who just come to get tips,” said Lee County Shuffleboard Club President Wally Thyssen.
Last year, he reported about 15,000 plays on the courts, for tournaments and regular play. By starting the free lessons last year, the club gained many new enthusiasts.
“It’s a very friendly club, with great courts. We did this last year and go many new members who are interested in shuffleboard.”
Shuffleboard is one of the area’s most popular sports. He said beginners should try it. “You don’t have to know anything, we’ll teach you.”
There are many strategies and nuances to learn as you progress, said organizer John Speer. He called the game “chess with a stick.”
Even pre-season, the club has many members. “We have about 180 members right now,” said Scottie Keusch, membership chairperson. “We’ll have many, many more in season.”
Last year, the club had 275 members, with someone from almost every community in North Fort Myers represented.
The Lee County Shuffleboard Courts are located at North Fort Myers Community Park, behind the library, at 2001 N. Tamiami Trl.
