No swim advisory continues at Yacht Club Beach
The no swimming advisory at Cape Coral Yacht Club remains in effect.
Water quality tests completed Wednesday indicate that the beach water quality at Cape Coral Yacht Club does not meet the criteria for enterococcus bacteria recommended by the United States Environmental Protection Agency.
This indicates that water contact may pose an increased risk of disease, particularly for susceptible individuals, officials said. Test results from other popular beaches in Lee County are satisfactory.
Additional testing is expected today.
Enterococcus bacterianormally inhabit the intestinal tract of humans and animals. The presenceof an elevated concentration of enterococcus is an indicator of pollution, which may come from stormwater runoff,
pets and wildlife, or sewage. Elevatedlevels of Enterococcus bacteria have been associated with an increased risk of swimming-associatedgastroenteritis illness (diarrhea and abdominal pain). Thisadvisory will continue until bacteria levels are below the accepted EPA level. New test results should be available by 4:00 PM on
September 9, 2010. For more information, view the website at www.doh.state.fl.us and select BeachWater Quality from the pull down menu.
