Lee Memorial named Best Hospital Workplace

3 min read

Lee Memorial Health System has received the award for the Best Hospital Workplace in the state by the Florida Hospital Association. Such an award reflects the health system’s efforts to enhance employee satisfaction through creative retention strategies. These Celebration of Service awards seek to recognize the highest achievements in patient care, community commitment and employee satisfaction.
“We are truly honored by this recognition,” said Lee Memorial Health System president Jim Nathan. “While most organizations strive to have an engaged and supportive work environment, the designation of best hospital workplace in Florida makes us very proud. We are fortunate to have impressive talent collaborating as a high-performing team that places patients first. Our Board and leadership work hard to have a positive culture and provide technology and resources so that our team members have what they need to do their jobs. This is especially challenging in a community that has faced so much economic adversity in recent years. We appreciate each and every one on our staff, and hope this recognition makes them proud, too.”
A team of judges outside of Florida independently reviewed employee satisfaction dating back to 2006 before recognizing the organizational achievements of Lee Memorial Health System within Florida’s hospital community. Overall system satisfaction scores improved from 72.5 percent in 2007 to 75.3 percent in 2009, placing the health system in the 89.9 percentile compared to peers. The system total employee turnover for 2009 was 8.8 percent, while the FHA benchmarks stands at 15.8 percent. The health system has been recognized nationally numerous times as an Employer of Choice and by AARP for creating a quality workplace.
Lee Memorial Health System also tied for FHA’s Community Benefit Award, which recognizes hospitals that have distinguished themselves through efforts to improve the health and well-being of their communities. This recognition was for LMHS’ successful efforts to partner with community organizations for the creation of a behavioral health triage program that reduces inappropriate use of law enforcement facilities and emergency departments for certain individuals in need of behavioral health support.
Open since 1916, Lee Memorial Health System is the seventh largest public health system in the United States and the largest community-owned health system in Southwest Florida. With more than 9,500 employees, the system is made up of four acute care hospitals and two specialty hospitals, as well as outpatient centers, walk-in medical centers and primary care physician offices. An award-winning health care system, it provides regional programs, such as our Trauma Center and Children’s Hospital, which serve our community members from Tampa to Miami.
