Cape man charged with DUI manslaughter in fatal Matlacha accident

A Cape Coral man involved in the accident April 13 that killed a Matlacha woman, and injured four others, has been arrested and charged DUI manslaughter and other infractions.

Florida Highway Patrol State Troopers reported today that it continues to conduct its investigation into the April 13 traffic crash that occurred at 5:47 p.m., at “The BBQ Place,” 4590 Pine Island Road, NW, in Matlacha.

In the crash, Cody James Curtis, 24, of Cape Coral, was driving a 1992 Nissan east on Pine Island Road. Five pedestrians were sitting outside at restaurant tables at The BBQ Place.

FHP reported the Nissan veered off the travel portion of the roadway, collided with the five pedestrians, a parked/unoccupied motorcycle and a westbound pickup truck. One pedestrian, later identified as Mary Lou Sharp, 80, of Matlacha, was pronounced deceased on scene, three pedestrians were transported with serious injuries and one pedestrian was transported with minor injuries.

Toxicology screening has determined Curtis’ blood alcohol concentration to be .137%.

Today April 22, Curtis was placed under arrest for DUI manslaughter (1 count), DUI serious bodily injury (3 counts), DUI property damage (1 count) and DUI injury (1 count) and booked into the Lee County Jail.
