The Matlacha/Pine Island Fire Control District Marine Unit was dispatched Sunday morning, March 28, to a possible body found in the water off Bokeelia in Jug Creek, according to Fire Chief Ben Mickuleit, who said, crews arrived to assist the Lee County Sheriff’s Department with body recovery.

The scene, he said Monday, was still under investigation by the Sheriff’s Department.

“A little later in the day (Sunday), probably around 5 p.m.,” said Mickuleit, “a woman driving toward Main Street, rather than turning left, drove straight, appearing to flip her vehicle several times, before landing in the water. When we arrived she was still inside the vehicle. The first arriving engine removed the patient and started treatment. Once EMS arrived and additional crew, she was transported to Station 3, where she was then transported, by helicopter, to Lee Memorial as a trauma alert.”

No other details were available at press time.

Mickuleit reported that the M/PIFCD had over 30 calls since Friday, March 26.
