Mickuleit provides update on island fire department

1 min read

Matlacha/Pine Island Fire Chief Ben Mickuleit has been taking the coronavirus very seriously by following guidelines and recommendations from the CDC, such as having the firefighters keep track of their temperature twice a day, social distancing and staying home if they show symptoms of the virus or become ill.

Now, Mickuleit said, they’ve incorporated some additional safety features.

“While on shift, all the guys have to wear safety coverings, whether they’re in the station or driving the truck,” said Mickuleit. “Even if there are only two in the truck. The only time they are not required to wear a facial covering is when they eat or when they sleep.”

The cause of the recent vehicle fire on the island remains unknown. It was extinguished quickly, with no injuries, said Mickuleit, who also wants to remind everyone to go to the website and apply for a hurricane sticker if needed, as there are currently no visitors allowed at the firehouse.

Additionally, he encourages everyone to have a hurricane plan in place.
