The Pine Island Kiwanis Club and Bobby Holloway Memorial Fund joined forces in 2019 to offer educational help via scholarships.

“We hoped to do more for the kids by combining our efforts,” said Kiwanis member Carlyn Herring.

The Bobby Holloway Memorial Fund is funded by the annual fishing tournament, in his name, and the local Kiwanis Club, said Herring, is funded by the very generous donations given by the community.

Due to the recent pandemic, interviews for scholarship applicants were foregone this year, but funding came through for students just the same.

“We’re giving out 32 scholarships this year,” said Herring. “Due to these questionable times we probably did not get the donations that we have in previous years, but we feel the community was still very generous.”

According to Herring, the parents of scholarship recipients are traditionally invited to an awards ceremony, which will not be held this year, although she said the recipients should still be recognized for their tremendous effort. There were also many scholarship donations made by people who have chosen to remain anonymous. Although several of the recipients have just graduated from high school, Herring said there are also quite a few continuing on toward higher educational goals.

“We love helping these kids and letting them know that Pine Island is behind them supporting them in their endeavors,” said Herring. “Because graduating seniors tend to get a lot more when they graduate than they do in subsequent years, we want the youth to know that we’re here to support them throughout their entire education.”

The 2020 scholarship recipients are Dana Beck, Brooke Benjamin, Alaina Bollen, Hannah Bryan, Jennifer Bryan, Emma Cicoria, Noah Cicoria, Mackenly Davis, Ruddy Ditch, Kaylin Hill, Hannah Holloway, Noah Hyde, Georgia McCrea, Armando Perez, Erin Post, M. Mariah Ramirez, Anonda Rapp, Julia Robertson, Jessica Teets, David Bollen, Kelby Bower, Luna Harre, Nathan Hyde, Erykah Lucas, Elijah Marzella, Hannah Marzella, Paul McCrea, Zachary Potter-Zimmerman, Cassidee Rentsch, Cydney Rentsch, Madison Tilton and Sam Williams.

Donors included Heidi and Keith Talbot, Centennial Bank, Chuck’s Auto Repair, Doug Kruger, Dynamic South, GPIWA, Cove Systems, Lisa and Jay Benton, L-Don Award, Christine and Malte Sallstrom, Pine Island Plumbing, Carlyn and Ralph Herring, Roberta Nelson, Tonya and Scott Player and Soaring Eagle.
