GPICA on hold until further notice
Greater Pine Island Civic Association President Scott Wilkinson said last week that the group is still gathering data on the feasibility of incorporating Greater Pine Island.
“I feel sorry for the people trying to put a dock in, who need a public hearing,” said Wilkinson. “We tried to put them in on the April meeting but it was cancelled, now May is cancelled.”
Wilkinson said he feels bad that they can’t have the public hearing, as it seems everyone is in a holding pattern for now. The deadline, he said, is in July of this year, and that the incorporation issue will be on the ballot in November.
According to Wilkinson, it’s pending approval from the County Commissioners to then be sent to the Elections Committee.
The deadline to get the feasibility study completed is looming, and as Wilkinson said, they don’t yet have the data.
He said, though it’s a frustrating situation, everyone is doing what they can. He said even with permission to relax social distancing, the GPICa wouldn’t have had a meeting this month.
The last two monthly meetings, set for the first Tuesday of each month, were cancelled due to the pandemic. Normally, the GPICA meets monthly from October through May.
“I doubt we’ll have a meeting in June,” said Wilkinson. “I feel sorry for these people who tried to get a variance to put a dock in – I told them there are rooms in the library and the fire station if they’re available. I don’t know what else to tell them. I’d rather catch the virus myself than give it to someone.”
