Friends of Pine Island Library sponsor ‘True Stories from a Florida Lawman’ Dec. 10 at SJCCA
Does any reader recall the Eastern Airlines nighttime plane crash in the Everglades on Dec. 29, 1972? Rookie Florida game warden Gray Leonhard saw the crash light up the sky while patrolling, but in 1972 there was no 24/7 radio dispatcher and he was working alone with only his patrol car radio. This story and more will keep listeners spellbound when the Friends of the Pine Island Library welcome author and retired Florida Game Warden Bob H. Lee. Lee will be telling “True Stories from a Florida Lawman” Tuesday, Dec. 10, at 6:30 p.m. The program will take place at the St. James Civic Center at 3300 Fourth Ave., St. James City.
Most of Bob Lee’s 30-year career as a Florida game warden took place in St. Johns County, where he currently resides, but his stories cover the state including Pine Island. Lee’s first book, “Back Country Lawman,” was published in 2015, followed by “Bad Guys, Bullets and Boat Chases” in 2017.
Both books will be for sale after the program and are also available at the Pine Island Library. As part of Lee’s talk, he will display a large alligator head and “Tools of the Trade,” 4-5 small poaching devices with labels explaining what they are.
Preregistration is required on Eventbrite. The registration fee is $15 and includes the program and light refreshments.
