One person was hospitalized with minor injuries after an RV fire at the Mobil station on the corner of Hancock Bridge Parkway and Orange Grove Boulevard nearly destroyed the vehicle and did minor damage to the gas station itself.

Sunday afternoon, an RV, apparently experiencing some problems, pulled into the Mobil station, thinking that the RV was running out of gas, when it burst into flames just before it arrived at the gas pumps, officials said.

A video online shows the fire, billowing smoke and flames shooting out of the RV minutes after the fire started.

Christi Kulwicki of the North Fort Myers Fire & Rescue said the RV coasted short of the pumps when the fire happened just inside the overhang.

The North Fort Myers Fire & Rescue was summoned to put out the fire to the RV, half of which was destroyed, and to mitigate the damage to the gas station, which could have resulted in a disaster with the fire so close to the pumps.

One person was taken to Lee Memorial Hospital with minor injuries, officials said.

The roof just above the pumps was also badly charred, though there was no damage to the inside or the pumps themselves. The station remained closed Monday morning while the fire remained under investigation by the State Fire Marshall’s Office, Kulwicki said.
