The Matlacha Hookers presented their final check from the 2018 fishing contest for $2,500 to Pine Island Elementary at their monthly meeting Sept. 9.

“This check is the balance of our 20th fishing tournament,” Madam Helen Andrews said.

“We are very grateful and humble and the money I was given went to our all-star camp to make sure we can do our remediation and do things to help our kids get caught up a little bit, and a lot of the incentive programs that we do, the principal parties that we do, reward them for giving a good effort every day,” Pine Island Elementary Principal Steve Hook said.

In 1998, 21 women got together and decided to “Make a difference in our community,” and the Matlacha Hookers group was formed. Over 1,000 members have joined over the 19 years, and the current membership is 300 strong.

Most members live in the immediate area and are year-round residents. However, many members are winter residents, other members may have been just passing through and wanted to be a part of our movement and the notoriety of becoming a “Hooker.” All of these members are vital to the organization.
