Library to hold first book discussion of season Sept. 19
The Pine Island Library will hold a book discussion at 1:30 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 19. The book to be discussed is “Everglades: River of Grass” by Marjory Stoneham Douglas.
The Native Americans who lived in the Everglades called it Pa-hay-Okee. It is primordial, swampy, bursting with exotic native plants and home to some of the most incredible wildlife on the planet. Douglas declares, “There are no other Everglades in the world.”
This spellbinding book reveals the natural history of the Everglades and the its people. The author, Douglas, is the person who focused attention on the Everglades and how it was being destroyed by humans and why it was important to protect it.
