Old Time Reunion is a walk down memory lane

Approximately 75 “Old Timers” arrived at the old Matlacha / Pine island fire house Saturday to celebrate and reminisce about the good old days.
“This gathering has been going on for more years than anyone remembers,” organizer Barbara Howard said. “This is the Pine Island Old Timers Reunion where all the elders of Pine Island and Matlacha get together to remember the old times.”
Regina Clewe Coleman came all the way from Alabama to celebrate at what is now the art building in Matlacha Park
“I was born here 80 years ago,” Coleman said. “Matlacha and Pine Island were very different then. Pine Island Road was paved with oyster shells and sand when we grew up here nobody wore shoes.”
“These walks down memory lane are a lot like family reunions,” Howard said. “People haven’t seen each other for a year or more and have a lot of catching up to do. Then they start talking about the old times. Life was harder then but it seems everyone remembers living here fondly.”
The Pine Island Old Timers Reunion “Walk Down Memory Lane” is an annual event held on the first Saturday after July 4.
