Be prepared for your doctor’s appointment

2 min read

So, you have a doctors appointment, are you prepared?

Being organized is the most important thing you can do for yourself before going to the doctor. It will insure that all of your questions and concerns will be addressed.

Doctors are not mind readers and they do not have X-ray vision. You need to talk to them.

Prior to a visit you should have:

1. A list of all your current medications including any over-the-counter medications and any vitamins you are taking.

2. Write down any questions you have for the doctor prior to going to the office so that you do not forget them once you are in the office and be specific. What happened? When did it start? What did you do? Does anything make it better or worse?

3. If you have pain describe it sharp, dull, stabbing, continuous. Where is located? How long have you had the pain?

4. If you had lab work, X-rays or any other procedures ask about the results. Do not assume that the results are normal just because the doctor did not mention them.

5. If necessary bring a friend with you to the appointment.

In the office:

1. If you are receiving a new medication make sure you know why you are taking it. What are the side effects? What are the negative symptoms that should they occur, you need to call the doctor?

2. If new tests or procedures are ordered make sure you know why? Ask if there is anything you need to do prior to the test or procedure, such as fasting.

Remember you and your doctor are partners. Help your doctor so YOU receive the best possible care.
