Pine Island Elementary to hold Veterans Day ceremony
Pine Island Elementary School invites all veterans to attend a special Veterans Day Program at the school Thursday, Nov. 10. The program, which begins at 10:30 a.m. in the pavilion, will include patriotic music and readings from the students.
“I would like to invite the community to attend this annual event,” Monica Renz, 4th grade teacher, said. “We will have special recognitions and special seating for all of our veterans. Then, following the ceremony, the veterans will have lunch in our cafeteria.”
“Amazing touching moving a true tribute.”
These are just some of the words that have been used to describe the annual Veterans Day Program put on by the students and staff at Pine Island Elementary. For the past several years the school has invited parents, members of the community and veterans to this event.
Students begin working on this event over a month in advance to make sure they are honoring the veterans in the best possible way. Fifth grade students were asked what Veterans Day means to them. One student responded with, “Should mean a whole lot to everyone because it makes Veterans feel confident, appreciated, and helps them get through what they have to go through.”
Another student stated, “It is a time to give back to the Veterans who have given so much to us.”
Pine Island Elementary has been celebrating island veterans since the first ceremony in November 1997. Tommy Thompson, the principal at the time said, “We want the children to have people and faces to put together with Veterans Day. This way, it becomes more than just a holiday. It has meaning.”
“This is also an opportunity for the kids to give back to the island because the community does so much for the school,” Renz said. “As well as giving back to the veterans who live on the island. We look forward to honoring our veterans at this event.”
Music will be provided by Pine Island Elementary students and a special presentation by the students.
