The 3rd annual Beacon of H.O.P.E Pine Island Playhouse (PIPy) awards ceremony was held Saturday night at the Pine Island United Methodist Church.

Following an opening entertainment number, Artistic Director Nichole Pichon served as master of ceremonies.

“This event is for all of the Playhouse members to be recognized for their participation in season three of Pine Island Playhouse,” Pichon said.

The winners in various categories were announced.

Best Supporting Male: Gary Dowd for his role as the Wizard in “The Wizard of Oz.”

Best Supporting Female: Denyea Swartz for her role as Ouiser in “Steel Magnolias.”

Best Lead Male: Glenn Ford for his role as the Scarecrow in “The Wizard of Oz.”

Best Female Lead: Rebecca Carden for her role as Doris in “Miracle on 34th Street.”

Special PIPy: April Williamson

For the first time, Pine Island Playhouse awarded a scholarship.

“This scholarship was completely funded with private donors,” Pichon said. “Applicants must be in their senior year and have participated in a Playhouse show during their senior year. They must also be going to school in pursuit of a theater degree. The winner of the first scholarship was Jessica Hill.”

Pichon begins preparing for opening night months in advance by calling Pine Islanders to audition. Some plays require only a few actors while others require many. Volunteers are always needed.

Plays planned for the upcoming Pine Island Playhouse 2016/2017 Season are: Aug. 26-28 – “Eat (It’s Not About Food);” Nov. 4-6 – “War of the Worlds;” Dec. 16 – “A Madrigal Dinner;” March 3-5 – “The Fool of the World and the Flying Ship;” May 12-14 – “The Odd Couple;” and Summer Theatre Camp – “Grimm’s Fairy Tales.” All dates are subject to change.
