Hookers school supply drive ends Aug. 2
The Matlacha Hookers back-to-school drive is under way. The Hookers are counting on the generosity of the great folks on Pine Island to help the children of Pine Island Elementary start the school year off with everything they need!
Due to school starting early Wednesday, Aug. 10, the deadline for collection of items is Aug. 2.
There are still many families on Pine Island struggling to make ends meet, so the Hookers want to pool their resources and help out.
“With the price of gasoline, food and school clothes, one thing families have difficulty with is making sure their children have needed school supplies each year,” Hooker board member Darlene Widirstky said.
And, the Matlacha Hookers want to help and ease that burden a bit.
The following is a list of items, supplied by island teachers, that the children may need upon entering school: backpacks (no wheels), pencil boxes, scissors (blunt tip), #2 pencils, large pink rectangular erasers, cap erasers, Whiteboard markers (fine tip), glue sticks, colored pencils, red, blue and black pens, red pencils with erasers, Elmer’s glue, Wide-ruled loose leaf paper, marbled composition books, spiral notebooks in all sizes, rulers, Crayola crayons, yellow high-lighters, 3 x 5 index cards, Expo markers (dry eraser), pocket folders in all colors, Kleenex with aloe, fun stickers, Scotch tape, Ziplock bags (all sizes), Handiwipes/Lysol disinfectants, 3-ring binders (2 and 3-inch).
Many of the local businesses and churches are collection points. These locations include the Matlacha Post Office, The C W Fudge, The Perfect Cup, Trader’s Hitching Post, Little Lilly’s Deli, island Girl Fitness, Winn-Dixie, The Island Grill, the Fisher of Men Lutheran Church, the Methodist Church, Pine Island First Baptist Church, Pine Island Community Church, Stone Gate Bank, Century 21, Capital Bank, and the Catholic Church.
