More than 20 Pine Island/ Matlacha residents arrived at the Matlacha Bridge around noon Sunday to show their concerns about the waters of Matlacha Pass.

“This is a peaceful, quiet, mindful, awareness-raising event about our water quality,” Birdy Smock said. “We will be here two hours. Our intention is to bring awareness about clean water, supporting our fishery and estuary, to replace the Ceitus Barrier, over development (Seven Islands) and pollution. We plan to have many ‘estuary awareness days’ until the politicians hear us.”

The ‘Water Awareness Group’ is planning another protest Sunday, May 22, from noon until 2 p.m.

“Everyone is welcome to attend,” Smock said.
