Books, books and more books will be available at the Friends of the Pine Island Library annual Book Sale and Raffle at the Fishers of Men Lutheran Church, 10360 Stringfellow Road, Saturday, Feb. 20, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

“There will be more than an estimated 2,000 books for sale, including books on CD, CDs and DVDs. The books are mostly donated from the public,” Friends president Judy Hopkins said, adding that they are not borrowed books from the library that are worn. “We get all kinds of old books and new beautiful books.”

The topics range from fiction and cooking or gardening, to self help, history and military.

“You just never know what you’re going to find and you can’t beat the prices,” Hopkins said.

Hardcovers are $1 each, large softcovers are $1 a piece and small paperbacks are only 50 cents, as well as a DVDs and CDs.

Five raffle baskets will be on display at the library starting Feb. 12. They will include a gift card tree, craft beer basket, food and wine baskets, and an orchid. Members of the organization will be on hand at the library to sell tickets for the raffle that will be drawn at the book sale $1 each of 6 for $5.

The sales at the Friends of the Pine Island Library are known for being extremely well organized.

“You’re not looking through everything for that one craft book,” Hopkins said. “Our volunteers really work hard at sorting and arranging the books.”

Proceeds from the sale benefit the Friends of the Pine Island Library and their programs.

“It directly supports the island library,” she said. “It is one of our biggest fundraisers.”

The Friends of the Pine Island Library use the funds to provide a mix of special programs for children, teens and adults. It covers musicians, artists, materials and programs for children during the Summer Reading events. It also pays for refreshments and prizes for additional library programs.

“We support a lot of the programming,” Hopkins said. “We are very fortunate to be able to.”

The club also helps with equipment and improvements to library.

“If you love your library, for $5 support it, by becoming a member of the Friends of the Pine Island Library,” she said of the membership fee.

The different costs for an annual membership to the Friends of the Pine Island Library are $5 for individuals, $10 for a family, or $100 for a lifetime membership.

The club also hosts a second book sale in December – the annual Fall Book Sale.

“We don’t keep recycling the old books from the previous sale,” Hopkins said of the inventory for sale. “”You’re not going to see the same old thing. It’s always new every sale.”

Donations to the book sales are appreciated, she added, small quantities can be left at the library’s circulation desk.

The Friends of the Pine Island Library meet on the fourth Thursday of the month from October through April at the library at 3:15 p.m. following the Library Book Discussion.
