Time Capsule deadline approaching

2 min read

On April 21, the Pine Island Eagle will dedicate a time capsule at the Museum of the Islands. Fifty years later, on April 21, 2066, the time capsule will be opened. What officials and residents will find inside are items that represent and illustrate Pine Island today – the “state-of-the-island” today, work from local artists, writings from local authors, things that reflect Pine Island in 2016.

The time capsule is approximately half full. Pine Island’s charitable organizations, businesses and Pine Islanders are encouraged to participate. Twenty-first century items that may be included are: Smart Phone; flash drive; CD/DVD; eyeglasses; contacts lenses, etc.; photographs of places on the island to show what the island looks like today; books by local authors; restaurant menus; posters from events held on the island; etc.

Project organizers would also like to include short biographies and photographs of long-time island residents.

Phil Buchanan has donated a copy of “The Nature Lovers Guide to Pine Island.” This guide includes a brief history of Pine Island as well as the plant and animal life on the island. An important part of the guide is a copy of the current Pine Island Plan as amended through March 2011.

Pine Islanders in the future will likely find it interesting to measure the effects of the amendments under consideration today.

The Pine Island Time Capsule committee will review all suggestions. The committee includes: Ed Franks, editor of the Pine Island Eagle; Phil Buchanan, Pine Island activist; Vickie Duflo, president of the Museum of the Islands; Sharon Traylor, Museum of the Islands board; Mike Shevlin, real estate broker, and John Kendall, president Calusa Land Trust.

The deadline is April 21 or when the committee runs out of space in the capsule. Those who would like to include something can contact Franks at efranks@breezenewspapers.com. Please include your contact information.
