As part of “Red Ribbon Week,” Kindergarteners through 5th grade students at Pine Island Elementary School competed for the best decorated classroom door. Fourteen classroom doors were judged.

“The theme this year is ‘Respect Yourself,'” school counselor Katherine Hammond said. “It’s an awareness program about teaching students to say no to drugs and no to bullying. Each door was decorated by the students with those themes in mind.”

“This is our second annual ‘Red Ribbon Week,'” Principal Rob Mazzoli said. “Each day from Wednesday, we’ve had a different theme. Wednesday was ‘Team Up Against Bullying’ where the students wore sports shirts; Thursday was ‘Turn your back on Drugs’ and the students wore their shirts backwards; and Friday was ‘Celebrate Red Ribbon Week’ and everyone wore red.”

There were four winners:

Ms. Acosta’s class (Grade K Theme: I Know A Minion Things I Can Do Instead of Drugs)

Ms. Manguson’s class (Grade 1 – Theme: Owl Always Stay Drug Free)

Ms. Bernard’s class (Grade 2 Theme: Don’t Do Drugs, That’s Just Nuts)

Ms. Notarianni’s class (Grade 5 Theme: Don’t Get Wrapped Up In Drugs)

The judges for the contest were Mazzoli; Linda Gassner, secretary to the principal; Bridgette Amico-Dodig, curriculum specialist; Ed Franks, Eagle editor; Jennifer Overbaugh, parent; and Hammond.

“All of the doors are very creative and, of course, there is a Halloween theme running through,” Mazzoli said. “The teachers and students work hard to bring home the anti-drug and anti-bullying message.”
