The Matlacha/Pine Island Fire Control District is teaming up with the Pine Island Moose Lodge to raise funds to replace the department’s outdated extrication tools.

The fundraiser will be held at the Moose Lodge, 8903 Stringfellow Road, St. James City, Saturday, Nov. 14, starting at 11 a.m.

“This is an ‘all you can eat fish fry,'” Deputy Chief Benjamin Mickuleit said. “We are working to raise donations to replace our old extrication tools, also called the Jaws of Life. The equipment we have is more than 10 years old and is hydraulically operated. This means we are trailing a hose.”

Extrication tools consist of “cutters,” “spreaders” and “rams.” Cutters are designed to cut through steel.

“In some cases our old cutters simply aren’t strong enough,” Mickuleit said. “The new cutters are not only battery operated, but can cut the newer steels used in cars today. The new spreaders and rams are also battery operated and much lighter weight.”

The deputy chief praised islanders and organizations for their assistance.

“Other local organizations are helping us as well,” Mickuleit said. “The Pine Island VFW and the American Legion. Music will be provided by Washboard Scotty. Scotty says all musicians are welcome to bring their instruments and join in the fun.”

The Fire Department will offer free blood pressure checks and there will be a White Elephant sale, and other fun activities.
