Do you own a dog that is friendly to other dogs, both large and small, and adores young children?

Perhaps you both might be interested in volunteering at Pine Island Elementary School on Tuesday’s from 9-10:30 a.m.

That’s where and when Principal Robert Mazzoli and librarian Elana Newman welcome a group of volunteers and their therapy dogs to the “Paws for Reading” program held in the school library.

Children who have earned the privilege are sent by their classroom teachers to the library where singly or in small groups they sit by one of the dogs and read orally to the canines.

This program allows the children to bone up on their oral-reading skills, read a book of their choice, and provide a calm break in their school day for some stressed kids.

Needless to say the dogs and handlers also derive much satisfaction from the interaction.
