Pinewood Derby: Island scouts participate annual race
Nearly 20 boys, plus parents and grandparents, gathered at the Pine Island United Methodist Church last week to participate in a Pinewood Derby. The Pinewood Derby is a racing event for the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts of America. Scouts, with the help of their parents, build their own cars from kits containing a block of pinewood, plastic wheels, and metal axles.
The first Pinewood Derby was held May 15, 1953, in Manhattan Beach, Calif., for Cub Scout Pack 280C. The concept was created by the Pack Cubmaster Don Murphy. Murphy’s son was too young to participate in the Soap Box Derby races at the time so he came up with the idea of racing miniature wood cars.
