Playhouse Summer Theater Camp to present ‘Robin Hood’
“The next production from the Pine Island Playhouse will be ‘Robin Hood,'” Nichole Pichon, Pine Island Playhouse coordinator, said. “I am currently reading Howard Pyle’s ‘The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood’ and will base the play we do on that.”
Robin Hood became a popular English folk figure in Medieval times and since then many books and plays have been written about him. In modern culture, Robin Hood has been the topic of dozens of movies from the 1922 silent movie starring Douglas Fairbanks to the 2010 version starring Russell Crow.
“The thing about Robin Hood is there are many more characters in the book than ever show up in the play’s or movies I’ve seen,” Pichon said. “I am still working out how I’m going to write the play because it is for 7 to 17-year-olds. I am thinking about doing the play as ‘storyteller’ theatre so that several kids could play Robin Hood.”
The play will be a production that is all children ages 7 to 17. If there are any adults that would like to participate as mentors and volunteers, please contact the Beacon of H.O.P.E.
This production will require an extensive cast.
“This cast can be as many members as we can find,” Pichon said. The more kids that show up the better… well, up to 50 kids.”
“I am really excited that Rebecca Cardin, who played Annie in ‘The Miracle Worker’ will be co-teaching with me on this production,” Pichon said. “I decided on this play because it’s really about giving to people in need. That’s what the Beacon does.”
“The first Summer Camp date is Saturday, June 14, from 10:30 to 2:20,” Pichon said. “The first part of the day we will be using as class time where we will be teaching the kids about theater; basically an introduction to theater for a lot of these kids. Then after lunch, at least on the first Saturday, we’ll have auditions and casting the show, read-throughs and things like that.”
Camp dates are Saturdays: June 14, 21 and 28; July 5, 12, 19 and 26; and Aug. 2, at Pine Island Fishers of Men Lutheran Church, 10360 Stringfellow Road, St. James City.
Transportation is available for 14 students. These spots will be filled on a first-come first-serve basis.
Enrollment forms are available at the Beacon of H.O.P.E. The deadline for turning in the forms is May 31.
