Island Lions hold World Lunch Relay

2 min read

The Greater Pine Island Lions Club hosted its Lions World Lunch Relay last week for 56 islanders (Little Leaguers and their families). The international event brings family and friends of the Lions around the world together to celebrate the value of service and the rewards of being a Lion.

“This is a great opportunity for Pine Island residents to learn more about the Pine Island Lions Club, its work and opportunities and to get involved,” Mary Von Berg, president of the Greater Pine Island Lions Club, said.

“The Greater Pine Island Lions Club has been on the island since 1969,” Von Berg said. “We, the Lions, sponsor a Little League team and we’ve been having these ‘relay’ parties for many years. As far as I know, we are the only sponsor that holds these parties for the kids. The original scheduled date was April 4 but the Lions extended it for the month of April.”

Lions Club International is the largest service organization in the world. Its 1.35 million members in more than 46,000 clubs are serving communities in 208 countries and geographical areas around the globe. Since 1917, Lions Clubs have aided the blind and visually impaired, championed youth initiatives and strengthened local communities through hands-on service and humanitarian projects.

Pizza and soft drinks were served after the game between the two Little League teams, the Tigers and the Orioles.
