‘Protecting Pine Island Sound in 9 Easy Steps’

2 min read

The Pine Island Garden Club will feature Ms. Mary Ann Parsons as guest speaker for the Thursday, Jan. 16, meeting. Born in Milwaukee, Wis., Parsons had her career in wireless telephony in Naperville, Ill., for 20 years. She has a degree in teaching, an MBA, as well as a love for the outdoors, gardening and protecting the environment.

She is a Lee County Master Gardener with over 12 years experience teaching and consulting in the gardening field. Her favorite topic is the Florida Yards & Neighborhoods Program, which deals with “Florida Friendly” gardening, a sustainable way to have a beautiful yard while being kind to the delicate South Florida environment. Her presentation, “Protecting Pine Island Sound in 9 Easy Steps,” will cover “What does it mean to be Florida Friendly?” and “How can I save money in my own backyard while protecting this delicate environment?” and “What’s so special about native plants?”

The Garden Club Gala will be held Feb. 23 at Garden Club Park, Island Center. There will be demonstrations during the day, plant and tree vendors selling amazing inventory, local authors signing and selling their books, a fantastic “white elephant sale,” and many raffle prizes given away during the entire gala. Raffle tickets are now on sale from club members.

There are a few spaces left for vendors who would like to participate. Contact Marty Kendall at 239-283-8175 for details.

Monthly Garden Club meetings are held at the Fishers of Men Evangelical Lutheran Church at 10360 Stringfellow Road and begin at 9 a.m. with coffee and refreshments followed by our guest speaker’s presentation and finishing up with a brief member’s business meeting.

Club meetings are free and open to everyone. If you are interested in attending a meeting or becoming a member (annual dues are $20), call Kathie Reiter, membership chairman, at 283-3176.
