Dog saves St. James City man
Early Wednesday morning Dan Sentell was asleep in his home in St. James City when his dog, Sundae, woke him up by jumping on his chest.
Sentell uses both a C-pap (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) as well as an oxygen mask and was unaware of any problem. Shooing the dog away, he fell back asleep. A few minutes later, Sundae returned and once again jumped on Sentell’s chest. When he removed his mask, Sentell immediately smelled smoke.
He ran to the kitchen and saw fire and smoke and immediately called the fire department.
The Pine Island Fire Department determined that it was electrical work done on the air conditioning unit earlier in the day that caused the fire.
“If it hadn’t been for Sundae it is very likely that the house would have been entirely engulfed,” Sentell’s wife Ellen said. “With his C-Pap mask, he probably would not have smelled the fire until it was too late. Sundae is our heroine!”
