Kathy Royse of Pineland planted a garden this year. Not just any garden but one that covers about a quarter acre of land.

“Normally a garden should be planted in September, but this year we had a lot of rain,” Royse said. “In September we were still flooded out here so we had to wait awhile, until October to begin tilling the land. Our first crop was available in November and I had seven dish pans full of green beans.”

The garden contains, beans, four varieties of tomatoes, Pilipino sweet potatoes, squash, cabbage, cucumbers and okra.

“I’ve given away so much and we haven’t harvested our second crop yet,” Royse said. “We give a lot to those in need and people at the church. Also when I was up north in Wisconsin, I used to can all of the time. With all of this I’ve gotten back into canning.”
