The Great Calusa Blueway Paddling Trail is an outstanding eco-tourist attraction and is available year-round to local residents. A source of recreation, it is easily accessed from several spots in Matlacha and Pine Island. Use a personal kayak or get a rental.
Before going, come to the Pine Island Library at 6 p.m., today, Oct. 23, to hear Lee County Communications Director and island resident Betsy Clayton discuss the trail. She will also share information on the upcoming Calusa Blueway Paddling Festival happening the first weekend in November. The festival has events for beginners and experienced kayakers.
The next day, Thursday, Oct. 24, at 1:30 p.m., Lillian Bradley will begin this season’s book discussions with Kate Alcott’s “The Dressmaker.” Following at 3:15 p.m., The Friends of the Pine Island Library will hold its first meeting of the season. Everyone is welcome to attend these two enjoyable events.
On Tuesday, Oct. 29, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., oneblood’s Big Red Bus will be at the library. This is a perfect opportunity to donate blood at a convenient location.
There are several events planned for the children as well. Wednesday, Oct. 30, is Wacky Wednesday. At 4 p.m., we are presenting a Spooktacular participation! The next Family Storytime session begins Thursday, Oct. 31, at 11 a.m. Deanna always puts on an engaging show full of stories, songs, and crafts.
On Oct. 26, look for the library table at the Kiwanis Club Fall Festival. Deanna and Jammie will have a selection of books, treats and activities. While they are up there having fun, the guys will be in charge of the library.
The library will be adding some interesting titles near the end of the year: “Innocence” by Dean Koontz; “Hunted” by Karen Robards; “Hazardous Duty” by W.E.B. Griffin; and “The Gods of Guilt” by Michael Connelly. These titles are already in the catalog and can be placed on hold. But do it quickly! Avid readers from up north are beginning to arrive.
The Lee County Library System now requires a library card or a photo ID to check out items. If you do not bring a library card, a picture ID, or know your library card number, staff members cannot access your records. Every two years cards must be renewed. Staff has to see a photo ID and proof of residence for renewal. A driver’s license is perfect for this. Patrons less than 18 years of age require a name ID and verification of address to check out items if they do not bring their library card. A school ID or a report card will suffice.
It won’t be long before the books start flying off our shelves. Swing by the library soon for the best pick of titles.
The library is located at 10700 Russell Road, NW, just northwest of Pine Island Center. Stop in and see us!
