As part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, From Our Hearts held an Octoberbreast celebration at Miceli’s Restaurant in Matlacha. The event was held to raise funds through the sale of a calendar and the artwork used to create the calendar.

Students at Pine Island Elementary School entered their art into the contest. From those entries 13 were selected winners. One for the cover and one for each month.

The winning students were: Cover Ashley McGraw 5th Grade; January Dakota Darna 4th Grade; February Josslyn Rider 2nd Grade; March Kylee Anders 5th Grade; April Tanner Hollway 5th Grade; May Quinlan Mcelwain 2nd Grade; June Amber Young 4th Grade; July Veronica Bernal 5th Grade; August Kierra Frazier 4th Grade; September Matthew Frazier 5th Grade; October Rebecca Scott 5th Grade; November Blake DeSautis 5th Grade; and December Aaliyah Jackson 5th Grade.

“This event was a huge success,” event organizer Mary Scott said. “We held an auction of those 13 pieces of art and were able to raise $3,350. One new idea this year is Norman Love Chocolates creates a pink pump shoe made of chocolate. We purchased one to auction off and not only did the proceeds from our auction benefit Octoberbreast, but the proceeds at Norman Love go to the same cause.”

National Breast Cancer Awareness Month is a collaboration of national public service organizations, professional medical associations and government agencies working together to promote breast cancer awareness, share information on the disease and provide greater access to services.

From Our Hearts is a small organization with a big heart. It is dedicated “to help in the fight to find a cure for the debilitating disease of breast cancer and help those that for one reason or another need a helping hand.”

There were about 300 people that turned out for the eight-hour event.

“In addition to the auction, we sold quite a few calendars,” Scott said. “Calendars are available for sale and probably the best way to get one is to call me at 239-898-7969. They are great holiday, birthday or anniversary gifts and they help us in the fight against breast cancer.”
