Memorial Day services held on island

Memorial Day services were held at the Pine Island VFW Post 4353. Commander Paul Birdwell conducted the services with Chaplain Pete Gonya leading the prayers and Bob Betz singing the national anthem.
Barry August, past commander, and current adjutant of the Pine Island American Legion Post 136, spoke and his message was well received.
The Pine Island American Legion Post 136 Honor Guard and Color Guard, under the leadership of acting Honor Guard Capt. Pete Trazzera, concluded the services with a rifle salute and the playing of taps.
Honor Guard members present included Dick Thomas, Keith Keefer, Gene Gargano and Jerry Congdon. The Color Guard consisted of Rick Alvarez, Frank Taugner, Sue Walter, Brady Bucholz and bugler Joey Donkersloot.
Thomas, Legion Post 136 service officer said, “I have to say this was the best turnout we have ever had on Pine Island for any military service. Thanks to all who attended and honored our fallen veterans.”
