Little Free Library is now available in St. James City
A Little Free Library is now located in St. James City to provide a convenient way for islanders to share books with one another and encourage reading.
Becky Cole said these little libraries began in Wisconsin and Michigan because the communities did not have public libraries.
“I was introduced to these cute little libraries in Topeka, Kan., by my mom,” she said. “Then with my niece and her family, we visited three and swapped books at all of them. What fun.”
Cole decided to bring the idea back to Pine Island and began one at 2932 York Road, since it is heavily used by walkers, joggers and bikers. In the first two days of opening the library, Cole said there has been a lot of interest and exchange of books.
“Although we have a great library on the island, I thought this would be a fun thing in St. James City,” she said.
Individuals can swap a book, share a book, take a book or give a book to enjoy.
“I say it is fine if you have a book to swap, but even if you don’t, then just take a book and enjoy it,” Cole said. “I encourage anyone to stop by and use it or check it out. Possibly it will give more the idea to build their own little library.”
Pat Olkowski and Cole built the Little Free Library and Jeff Waterman assembled the roof. Julia Steck did the art painting.
