Project was Eagle Scout effort for Allen Serrell

Six new bookcases are now a part of the Beacon of H.O.P.E. Thrift Store, The Attic, thanks to members of the Pine Island Boy Scout Troop 20.
Allen Serrell, 17, said he decided to build the bookcases for the Beacon as part of his Eagle project because of what the organization has done for the community in the past.
“It’s a good way to give back to the community,” he said.
Serrell asked Beacon officials if they were in need of anything and they instantly told him bookshelves for The Attic, which kicked off the project.
It took about 20 man-hours to complete the bookshelves during the troop’s meetings at the Pine Island United Methodist Church. The finished products were installed at the thrift store Jan. 25.
Serrell said he had between six and eight other scouts help with the project, as well as a few adults.
“I couldn’t be more pleased with my troop’s willingness to help,” he said, adding that they were all easy to work with.
As the project leader, Serrell said he enjoyed the experience he obtained in leadership. He said it was nice working with the guys and learning how much they have changed, as well as he has over the years.
The most time consuming portion of the project, Serrell said, was putting the books back on the shelves in alphabetical order.
