Flamingo Bay: Feb. 17
Flamingo Bay will serve their delicious banana splits along with the Last Resort Band entertaining us with dance music. This afternoon of entertainment begins at 2 p.m. on Sunday Feb. 17 and the sundaes are $3.
St. James City Civic Association: Feb. 19
The SJCCA Annual Spaghetti Dinner will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 19 featuring delicious big meatballs made by B.J. Austin and her kitchen crew. Salad, garlic bread, assorted desserts from SJCCA board members and coffee and tea complete the all you can eat menu. Watch for the wine donation table and listen to the band Idle Speed-same band as last year. Tickets are $8; children 10 & under $4. Tickets are available from SJCCA board members or call B.J. at 283-6145. We start to serve at 4 p,m. We close the serving line at 6:30 p.m. At the close of the dinner, the “Ward Award” will be presented to an individual (or individuals) who have made outstanding contributions to SJCCA. You can volunteer by signing up at the bulletin board or by calling B.J. at 283-6145.
Pine Island Cove: Feb. 19
Pine Island Cove will have a CPR/AED class on Tuesday, Feb. 19 from 9 a.m. until noon at the Pine Island Cove clubhouse. Cost is $35 per person. You will be certified or re-certified in adult/child and infant CPR and also choking. This class will also teach you how to use an AED (Automated External Defibrillator). The class will be taught by a certified Lee County paramedic. If you would like to attend, please call Sharon at 239-283-2953, class size is 20, so please call to reserve early.
St. John’s Episcopal Church: Feb. 20
Beginning Wednesday, Feb. 20 at 4 p.m. St. John’s Episcopal Church, 7771 Stringfellow Road in St. James City, will conduct a Lenten Book Study on material from the book “3:16” By Mark Lucado. Books are available to purchase for $11. If you are interested, please call Janet Pinnell at 558-8135. After the class we will provide a “soup and simple” dinner open to the entire community at 5:30 p.m. in Comfort Hall. This will continue every Wednesday through the Lenten season. Everyone is welcome to all or any portion of the evening. There will be an evening service or evening prayer following the dinner.
Pine Island United Methodist Church: Feb. 21
Falling is not a normal part of aging and can be prevented by addressing risk factors. A presentation by Mark Tesoro will be given at the Pine Island United Methodist Church on Thursday, Feb. 21 from 10 a.m. until 12 p.m. Accidental falls are the leading cause of injury and death in adults over the age of 65, according to the U.S. Center of Disease Control and Prevention. The risk factors include vision, other medical problems, imbalance, drug interaction, faulty footwear, living space/environment, level of activity The event is sponsored by the Beacon of H.O.P.E. health and wellness program. American Legion Auxiliary Unit 136: Feb. 23
The ladies of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 136 will hold its annual golf outing, also known as the Hole in One Contest, on Feb. 23. This very successful event has proven in previous years to be a wonderful way of raising money to help veterans on Pine Island. The event will be set up by the pond at the American Legion providing individuals the opportunity to hit the golf ball over the water to the green. The first tee time is at 8 a.m. and the last tee off is at 4:45 p.m. The fee for the first shot is $5 and additional shots (mulligans) are $1 each. Top prizes will be awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place, closest to the pin. There will be a 50/50 drawing as well as raffles drawings for the many other prizes donated by businesses on and off the island. In addition to golf, hamburgers and hot dogs will be served from 12-2 p.m. along with homemade dishes of potato salad, macaroni salad, coleslaw and beans prepared by the women of the Auxiliary. Bar-b-Que chicken will be served from 5-7 p.m. for $6. The event will also feature music by Big John from 12-3 p.m. and Smalltown from 4:30-7:30 p.m. All money raised at the event goes directly to Veteran’s programs. Golfers, spectators and the public are invited to come out and enjoy the day.
Flamingo Bay: Feb. 23
Come Jump ‘n’ Jive at Flamingo Bay for the 3rd annual 50’s dance on Saturday, Feb. 23, to the Doo Wop King and his Queen, Ray and Colleen LoRae. Come dressed as your favorite character from the 50’s: Greaser, Pink Lady, Bobby Soxer, Zorro, Alice in Wonderland, car hop, swing dancers, zoot suits, Elvis, Ann Margaret, Tweet Bird and Sylvester or Lucy and Ricky, and dance to their rock and roll music. Low Cost Pet Clinic: Feb. 24
House Call Vet Dr. Scott Wouk DVM, will return to Pine Island on Sunday, Feb. 24, March 10 and 24 to offer a low-cost shot clinic for island pets. The clinic will take place at Pine Island Feed and Garden on Stringfellow Road in St. James City from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. No appointments are necessary however, pet owners are asked to bring dogs leashed and cats in carriers. St. James City Civic Association: Feb. 26
A yoga and art workshop with Deborah Zwetch will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 26 from 1-4 p.m. Individuals can create their own original hand painted silk scarf after a relaxed introduction to chair yoga. The event is sponsored by Order of the Golden Brush painting group of St. James City Civic Association. The workshop is $35 and all sill levels are welcome. Individuals should bring a table cover and comfortable clothes, all other materials provided. For information or to sign up for the workshop call Linda at 283-5207 or Mary Ann at 283-9337. Zwetch is the artist, designer and owner of Zwearscarf and creates original hand painted silk clothing. She is a graduate of Hartwick College and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. An award-winning textile/visual artist, her hand-painted 100 percent silk scarves and couture clothes are in the Smithsonian, the Naples Botanical Gardens and the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston. Zwetch is a certified yoga instructor and has been teaching yoga for over 12 years. Workshops with Deb are informative and inspirational.
Mah Jongg: March 7
As of March 7, Mah Jongg is switching from Fridays to Thursdays at St. James Civic Center (4th and Lemon) from 1-5 p.m. Individuals are encouraged to arrive at 12:45 p.m. Donations are $5 per person for non-members and $4 for members. Players are encouraged to bring their cards and games. Beginners will be taught and provided with a temporary card. Contact Pat Johnsen at 283-8368 for more information.
American Legion Riders: March 9
The American Legion Riders, Post 136, will have a steak dinner on March 9 from 1-6 p.m. The dinner, which is only $14, will include a 12 oz ribeye steak, baked potato, salad, rolls and a dessert. A cash bar will also be available. Last Resort will provide the music beginning at 3 p.m. Call Chic at 440-785-7472 for dinner tickets. Everyone is welcome to attend the event. The American Legion Riders help veterans and the community. The money raised during the event will benefit various programs.
Cultural Park Theater: March 22
The Pine Island-Matlacha Community Emergency Response Team is going to raise operating funds by selling tickets to the play “Annie” to be played at the Cultural Park Theater, 528 Cultural Park Blvd., Cape Coral, on Friday, March 22 at 8 p.m. Tickets are $25 each and CERT will earn $5 for each ticket sold. American Legion Auxiliary #136: Feb. 6
The American Legion Auxiliary is hosting a fashion show on Feb. 6. Tickets are $10 and include a new menu for lunch. The tickets for the show will be available at the door while they last. Lunch will be served at 11:30 a.m., which will be followed by the fashion show.
Church of God of Prophecy: Feb. 9
Bokeelia Church of God of Prophecy are having their chicken dinner on Feb. 9 from 3-6 p.m. Call 283-2128 for take out.
Fishers of Men Lutheran Church: Feb 9
Fishers of Men Lutheran Church will hold its annual Arts and Craft Show on Saturday, Feb. 9 from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. Crafters from around the area will have many items on sale, which will include fused glass, purses, painted coconuts, palm fish, pottery, sewing and candles.

Pine Island Art Association: Feb. 9 and 10
The Pine Island Art Association’s 41st Annual Art Show and Sale will be held on Saturday, Feb. 9 and Sunday, Feb. 10 from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. at the Matlacha Community Building, 4577 NW Pine Island Road. The show is always Matlacha’s biggest event. It showcases the newest work of our artists. You will find Florida theme works, large and small, in all mediums, matted and framed and ready to hang. There will also be more than 500 of our popular original mini paintings by PIAA artists just $10 each. Join us at our show and stay to sample our home baked refreshments.

Friends of Pine Island Library: Feb. 12
On Tuesday, Feb. 12 at 12 p.m. the Friends of the Pine Island Library will be sponsoring an opportunity to meet and have lunch with author Tim Dorsey.
Dorsey has published sixteen novels in several languages: “Florida Roadkill,” “Hammerhead Ranch Motel,” “Orange Crush,” “Triggerfish Twist,” “The Stingray Shuffle,” “Cadillac Beach,” “Torpedo Juice,” “The Big Bamboo,” “Hurricane Punch,” “Atomic Lobster,” “Nuclear Jellyfish,” Gator A-G Go,” “Electric Barracuda,” “When Elves Attack” and “Pineapple Grenade.” His latest novel “The Riptide Ultra Glide” was released January 22, 2013.

Earth & Spirit Garden Gallery: Feb. 17
Earth & Spirit Garden Gallery will have a Sunday brunch in the garden to benefit C.A.T.S. on Feb. 17 from 10:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. There is a $10 donation for a complete Pine Island breakfast prepared by Pamela Walker of “Rolling in the Dough.”
There will also be a silent auction, which includes gift certificates, artwork, as well as other items that have been donated. Tickets are $1 and you do not have to be present to win.
Pine Island C.A.T.S. was founded and headed by Edith Schulte who has made it her mission to reduce or eliminate the feral cat population in a humane way. Working hand-in-hand with PAWS, a no-kill shelter, they have developed a program of trapping, neutering and releasing stray and feral cats that roam the island. Even though most of the cats trapped and treated are returned to where they were first picked-up, many have found their ways into permanent homes on the island.

St. James City Civic Association: Feb. 22
Art Expo and The Photo Arts Group of the St. James City Civic Association call for entries for the Fifth Annual Greater Pine Island Photography Competition held Friday, Feb. 22, 2013. All photography must be the original work of the photographer.
Receiving is 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Feb. 22 at the St. James City Civic Association, 3300 4th Street (at Lemon), and the judging is 1:30-2 p.m.. The entry fee is $4 per entry with a maximum of five entries per person. The opening reception of Art Expo is Friday Feb. 22 from 7-9 p.m. Art Expo and the Photo Competition are open Sat. Feb. 23 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The competition is open to Pine Island seasonal and resident photographers in the following categories and classes.
