Memory Mobile to make stop on the island
The Alzheimer’s Association Florida Gulf Coast Chapter Memory Mobile will make an appearance on the island next week at the Beacon of H.O.P.E. to provide individuals with the opportunity to have a screening done, as well as collect information.
“The purpose of the memory mobile is to go out into the community as an outreach tool to bring information and education for caregivers and persons impacted by the disease or just seeking information,” said Emily Reese, program specialist.
The Florida Legislature created the Memory Mobile in 2001 and it now serves 17 counties in the Gulf Coast area. The mobile is partially funded by the Florida Legislature and sponsored by the Alzheimer’s Association Florida Gulf Coast Chapter, the Florida State Department of Elder Affairs and Senior Choices of Southwest Florida Inc.
“We are grateful to Rep. (Matt) Hudson and Sen. (Garrett) Richter for their support,” Reese said.
The Memory Mobile will be at the Beacon of H.O.P.E. Wednesday, Jan. 30, from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. All services are free.
Reese said the memory screens provided on the mobile are specific tests that can help pick up developing memory issues.
In addition to the screening, the mobile is also stocked with educational information and brochures in case caregivers have any questions and concerns about Alzheimer’s.
Although appointments are not necessary for the Memory Mobile, they are encouraged because it helps with the flow of people, Reese said, so people do not end up waiting too long.
“We schedule 20 minutes for the screen,” she said. “It generally takes 10 to 15 minutes on the average.”
The extra time is scheduled to provide an opportunity for the patient to ask questions and have a discussion.
Reese said individuals are more willing to come onto the Memory Mobile and have a screening done than make an appointment with their doctor, due to the convenience of the office on wheels.
